Not a whole truck? Smaller garages price down: a loose pile runs $82 small, $129 medium, $208 large; a bagged clear-out runs $132 for 10 bags, $264 for 15, $348 for 20. Renovation and demolition debris out of the garage is $120 per cubic yard, and yard waste — the pile of branches and bags behind the third bay — is $88 per cubic yard. Every order meets a $75 minimum. Individual heavy items you want priced separately (a spare fridge, a treadmill, a workbench) can be quoted piece by piece instead, but past four or five large things the truck-fill tier is almost always the cheaper way to buy it. Loading, the sweep-out and disposal are included, and your checkout total is confirmed before you book.

Add a rental and a second set of hands and a full garage becomes a whole Saturday. This is the section that decides the whole question, and the answer splits sharply depending on which side of the city line you live on.
Inside the City of Austin, residential bulk is handled by Austin Resource Recovery as an on-demand request — you file it at austintexas.gov/service/ondemand and wait for the scheduled date. Three limits matter: you get a limited number of free pickups per year, each carries a volume cap, and the service is curbside only and open only to city-of-Austin residential curbside-trash customers. A garage that has been filling since the house was bought is not a capped pickup; it is several. You will spend your allowance for the year in one afternoon and still have half the bay left, and the crew will not step inside the garage to help you carry any of it.
Outside the city limits — which is where most Austin garages actually are — the program does not apply to you at all. Round Rock, Cedar Park, Leander, Georgetown, Pflugerville, Hutto, Buda and Kyle each run their own contracted residential collection with bulk on a set schedule, not on demand. That is a different failure mode: instead of a cap, you get a wait. You drag the garage out to the curb and it stays there, in front of the house, until the scheduled bulk day comes around. Look up your own suburb's bulk calendar before you move a single box, because the gap between "pile at the curb" and "collection day" is the exact window HOA covenants are written to fine. Round Rock, Cedar Park, Circle C, Mueller, Georgetown's Sun City and the Leander and Kyle subdivisions all police visible bulk and appearance.
So the free options ask you to do the two things your HOA forbids: stage it at the curb, and leave it there. We invert that — the load comes out of the inside of the garage on a window you chose, straight onto the truck, and the driveway looks the same when we leave as it did when we arrived, minus the twenty years of boxes.
A garage is the most mixed load in this business, so it gets sorted rather than tipped. Usable furniture, tools, bikes, sporting goods and kids' gear go to donation first — Goodwill Central Texas, Habitat for Humanity ReStore (which is particularly good with tools, doors, cabinets and building materials from a garage remodel) and the Austin Furniture Bank, which furnishes homes for families leaving homelessness. Metal is the next biggest stream: shelving, bed frames, mowers, bar-and-plate weight sets, the old grill and the scrap pile in the corner all go to metal recovery instead of the landfill. Electronics — the tower PC, the monitors, the box of cables — route to Austin e-waste recyclers. Refrigerant appliances, meaning the garage fridge, a chest freezer or a window AC, have their refrigerant recovered and documented by an EPA-certified technician before the shell is scrapped, exactly as EPA Section 608 requires; that is a real cost line, and it is already inside your flat price. What is genuinely finished is disposed of at Texas Disposal Systems in Creedmoor, or the WM Austin Community Landfill for jobs up in the Pflugerville and Round Rock belt.
It is not a discipline problem, it is a housing-stock problem. Austin homes are slab-on-grade — there are effectively no basements in this metro. Everything a family in Chicago or Boston would put downstairs has exactly one place to go here, and that place is the garage. Add an attic that is unconditioned and reaches punishing temperatures for half the year, and the garage ends up doing the job of a basement, a storage room and a workshop at once.
The shape of the job then depends on the neighborhood. In the central bungalow belt — Hyde Park, Crestview, Allandale, East Austin — there is often only a detached single-bay garage or a carport, so the load is smaller but the access is tighter and there may be a gravel alley rather than a driveway. In the master-planned suburbs — Round Rock, Cedar Park, Leander, Georgetown, Pflugerville, Hutto, Buda, Kyle and Circle C — it is two and three-car garages with overhead rafter racks, which is where the full-truck jobs come from. In Westlake, Lakeway and Barton Creek, garages sit at the end of long, steep private drives with no curb to stage on and gate check-in for vendors, so the truck positioning matters more than the volume. And in downtown, Rainey Street and Domain buildings there is no garage at all in the suburban sense — it is a parking-level storage cage, which means a COI naming the association and management and a booked freight elevator window.
