Does the City of Austin pick up couches?
Sometimes — with the fine print doing the heavy lifting. Houses on city curbside collection can request Austin Resource Recovery's on-demand bulk pickup (austintexas.gov/service/ondemand): a limited number of free pickups per year, each volume-capped, collected from the curb only on a scheduled date. If you can carry the sofa to the curb yourself and don't mind it sitting there until the truck comes, it's a genuine option.
That fine print excludes most of the metro's couches. Apartment and condo dwellers — the majority of renters — are on private hauling, outside the program entirely, with dumpster corrals that ban furniture and bill violations back to the unit. Tower residents have no curb at all; everything exits via freight elevator and dock, with insurance requirements attached. And the suburbs — Round Rock, Cedar Park, Georgetown, Pflugerville, Buda, Kyle, Hutto, Leander — were never in Austin's program to begin with; they run their own scheduled collections, with HOA covenants policing the wait.
