Why Austin's own bulk pickup can't do it today
This is the whole reason a same-day market exists here, and it is structural rather than anyone's fault. Austin Resource Recovery runs residential bulk as a request system: you go to austintexas.gov/service/ondemand, submit a request, and are given a scheduled date. "On-demand" describes who initiates it, not how fast it happens. Layered on top are a limited number of free pickups per year, a volume cap on each one, curbside-only service, and eligibility restricted to city-of-Austin residential curbside-trash customers — so apartment and condo residents from West Campus to The Domain are outside the program entirely, because their buildings are on private hauling.
Outside the city line it is slower again. Round Rock, Cedar Park, Leander, Georgetown, Pflugerville, Hutto, Buda and Kyle run their own contracted residential collection with bulk on a fixed schedule. If your collection day has just passed, the answer to "can this be gone today?" is weeks. And in those same subdivisions, the HOA covenants restrict how long anything can sit visible at the curb — so the free option asks you to break the rule you are trying to comply with.
None of that is a problem when the deadline is soft. It becomes the problem when there is a walkthrough tomorrow, a lease that ends at midnight, or a violation letter with a cure date. That precise gap — a hard deadline versus a scheduled queue — is what this service is for.

Where it goes — even on a rush job
Speed is not an excuse to tip a truck. A same-day load gets the same routing as a scheduled one: usable furniture and household goods go to donation first — Goodwill Central Texas, Habitat for Humanity ReStore, ARC Resale and the Austin Furniture Bank — and every summer the city stands up its MoveOutATX donation stations around the UT area precisely because so much of what leaves apartments during the July 31 lease turnover is still perfectly usable.
After that: metal — bed frames, appliance shells, shelving — to scrap recovery; electronics, including the TV and the monitors, to Austin e-waste recyclers; and refrigerant appliances such as refrigerators, freezers and air-conditioners have their refrigerant recovered and documented by an EPA-certified technician before the shell is scrapped, exactly as EPA Section 608 requires. That last one is a real cost line that cut-rate rush haulers quietly skip, and it is already inside the flat price. The remainder goes to Texas Disposal Systems in Creedmoor, or the WM Austin Community Landfill on north-belt jobs.
Access on a rush job — and the one honest limit
Most Austin same-day work is straightforward because of how the housing stock is built: slab-on-grade homes with no basements, so the item is in an upstairs bedroom, a garage or a ground-floor apartment, and the exit is a door and a driveway. In the HOA suburbs — Round Rock, Cedar Park, Leander, Circle C, Georgetown, Kyle — we load from inside the garage on the scheduled window, so a rush job never leaves a pile visible on the street, which matters most when the reason for the rush is a violation notice. In West Campus and Riverside, the constraint is stairs and parking in dense student blocks, not access permission, and August is our busiest same-day month there by a wide margin.
The one place we will not oversell you is the towers. In downtown, Rainey Street and The Domain, there is no curb — everything goes out the loading dock, and the building requires a Certificate of Insurance naming the association and management company (typically $1M general liability) plus a reserved freight elevator and dock window, which many buildings schedule several business days out. We issue the COI the same day and will push for the earliest window the building will release, but that calendar belongs to the building. If someone promises you a guaranteed same-day high-rise clear-out without mentioning the elevator booking, they have not called your front desk yet.
When Austin needs it gone today
- A lease ending July 31. The single biggest same-day wave in the metro — West Campus and Riverside empty out at once, and the furniture has to be out before the keys go back.
- A closing or a walk-through tomorrow. March through June is the Texas sale peak, and a buyer's final walk-through does not reschedule because the garage still has a couch in it.
