Austin homes are slab-built — there is not a basement in the metro — so the junk lives in the garage and the attic, and clearing the garage is the single most common job we do here. It's also where the HOA reality bites: in Round Rock, Cedar Park, Circle C, Mueller and the master-planned suburbs you can't leave bulk at the curb outside the allowed window without risking a fine, so we pull everything straight from the garage on a scheduled flat-price pickup — nothing for the HOA to flag. Then there's the thing no other Texas metro has: the UT-Austin move-out wave. Leases overwhelmingly end July 31, so every August West Campus (78705) and Riverside (78741/78742) overflow with furniture nobody can haul. Across the rest of the city the work changes fast: the downtown, Rainey Street and Domain high-rises (COI + freight elevator), the Westlake and Tarrytown estate cleanouts on steep lots with no curb staging, and the East Austin and Riverside neighborhoods where we work Spanish-first.

We price the same way across all of it: send a photo, get a flat number that already covers the labor, the truck, the dump fees, and the drive out to Georgetown or Kyle. No "call for a quote," no hourly meter, no day-of upcharge, and no separate stairs, elevator or same-day fee. Same-day pickup is usually available.

How much does junk removal cost in Austin?

Flat rates, photo-quoted before anyone shows up. The labor, the drive, and the disposal are already in the number. Single pieces price per item; a garage, an apartment, or a whole house prices by how much of the truck it fills.

Does Austin pick up bulk junk?

Sometimes — and the fine print is what sends most people here. Austin Resource Recovery retired the old set-schedule bulk week and moved residential bulk to an on-demand request system: you request a collection, you get a limited number of free pickups per year, there's a cap on how much you can set out, and it is curbside only. Details and the request form live at austintexas.gov/service/ondemand, and you can start it through Austin 3-1-1.

Three limits decide whether it can help you:

• You have to be a City of Austin residential curbside-trash customer. If your address isn't on city collection, the program simply doesn't exist for you.
• Apartments and condos get nothing. Multifamily buildings across Austin are on private hauling contracts, so a resident of a West Campus tower, a Riverside garden complex, or a Rainey Street condo cannot request on-demand bulk at all — no matter how many free pickups the single-family house one street over is entitled to. The building dumpster is the only alternative, and virtually every property bans furniture and mattresses in it.
• The suburbs run their own programs. Outside the city limits — Round Rock, Cedar Park, Leander, Georgetown, Pflugerville, Hutto, Buda and Kyle — bulk is handled by each city's contracted hauler on its own scheduled bulk day, with its own list of what's excluded. And in the master-planned HOA subdivisions that dominate those cities, staging bulk at the curb outside the allowed window is exactly what earns a violation letter.

So the free program works if you own a city-serviced house, your volume is under the cap, you haven't used your pickups, and you can wait for a scheduled date with the pile sitting on your lawn. If any one of those is false — and for every apartment resident in Austin, at least one always is — a paid haul is the only real option. That's the gap we fill: we load from inside the garage or the unit, on a day you choose, at a price you knew before we left the yard.

What happens to it after pickup

Nothing usable goes straight to a landfill if we can help it. Furniture and household goods in resellable shape are routed to donation first — Goodwill Central Texas, Habitat for Humanity ReStore, the ARC Resale stores, Salvation Army, and the Austin Furniture Bank, which puts beds and sofas into homes coming out of shelter. During the summer student exodus the city's own MoveOutATX donation stations divert enormous volume — 249 tons in a past season — and that is exactly the material we're carrying down West Campus stairwells in late July.

The rest is separated by stream. Refrigerators, freezers, window and portable AC units get EPA-certified refrigerant recovery before anything is crushed — that's a real line cost and a legal requirement, and it's inside your flat price. TVs, monitors, printers and computers go to Austin e-waste recyclers rather than the trash. Metal is pulled for scrap. Only the genuine remainder is tipped at TDS Creedmoor or WM Austin Community Landfill. If you need a donation receipt for the tax file, ask on the day and we'll get it to you.

When Austin calls us

• The UT move-out, late July into August — leases end July 31 and an entire student city changes address in one week.
• Spring, March through June — spring cleaning collides with Texas's dominant home-selling season, so garages get cleared for staging and showings.
• SXSW in March, ACL in October, and F1 weekend — short-term rentals in the 04, East Austin and downtown get refreshed hard between guest waves.
• Tech relocation, all year long — Tesla's Gigafactory alone employs roughly 21,000 people, Oracle moved its headquarters here in 2020, Apple runs a campus of 7,000-plus, and Samsung's Taylor fab keeps pulling families into the Williamson belt. Every one of those moves is a garage purge on one end and move-in debris on the other.
• Downsizing and estates — Georgetown's Sun City and the older Tarrytown and Westlake homes, cleared with donation routing and discretion.
• The January reset — post-holiday declutter, the treadmill bought with good intentions, and the boxes that never got unpacked.
